Santo Domingo de La Calzada – Introduction

This small village in western La Rioja has a curious history, a charming historic centre and a Parador hotel, which draws a large numbers of visitors.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada was founded by a hermit, named Domingo who set up a hospital and road to aid pilgrims passing through the area on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The town which sprung up around the hospital is a pleasant enough spot, but the grand attraction is the town is the Cathedral, with it´s live cockerel.

Rather oddly, the 12th century cathedral houses a live cockerel, but there is method behind the seeming madness. It is said that Santo Domingo, on seeing a foreign pilgrim unjustly executed, brought the victim back to life. On hearing the news, the judge in the case exclaimed that it wasn´t possible, and that the man was as dead as the chicken on his plate, at which point said chicken leapt off the plate, much to the judges astonishment. Hence, the cockerel. If it´s not a true story, then it´s certainly an intriguing one, and the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada has made a pretty good living out of it.
