Guide to Zafra – Introduction

What Zafra lacks in size it more than makes up for in it’s beautiful whitewashed old town and fun, jovial atmosphere. With a very handy location for onward travel into Andalucia, Zafra is a fantastic option for a stopover.

The town’s Roman history is a little sketchy with contrasting opnions on it’s relevance, but under the Muslims, Zafra gained strategic importance due to it’s position between Southern Extremadura and the important Islamic city of Seville – fortified by successive Muslim leaders and named Cafra. From there, the Chrisitan reconquest spluttered eventually to victory, and in the following years both stability and a building boom ensued. The 15th century saw an amplification of the city walls and the construction of the iconic Alcazar (castle) which today houses a stunning Parador hotel. A wonderfully picturesque town, and well worth some of your time.
