Guide to Vitoria. It Rains in Spain Guide.

Guide to Vitoria – Introduction

The city of Vitoria, with its inland location and fewer than a quarter of a million inhabitants is rather surprisingly the capital of the Basque Country – the seat of regional government. It is a smart and well kept city with beautiful architecture and a feverish gastronomic scene. There are plenty of outdoor spaces, and the sizeable student population keeps the pace ticking.

Vitoria, much like San Sebastian and Bilbao is around 1000 years old and was founded by the King of Navarra. Passing between various Kingdoms of Northern Spain, the city grew wealthy from the trade of wool and iron amongst other things, becoming the capital of the Basque Country in 1979.

With a collection of attractive squares, elegant official buildings and a whole host of culinary delights, Vitoria is well worth a visit.

What to See and Do in Vitoria

  1. A stroll in the small and densely packed Casco Antiguo is a good place to start with it’s collection of notable churches and aristocratic buidlings, ending up gazing at the magnificent architecture on show at the Catedral de Santa Maria.
  2. Inside the casco antiguo, head to the picturesque Plaza de la Virgen Blanca and take a look at the central monument dedicated to the Duke of Wellingtons military success against the French in 1813.
  3. Also in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca sits the Gothic Iglesia de San Miguel, dating from the 14th century and dedicated to Vitoria’s patron saint – the White Madonna.
  4. Treat yourself to a meal at El Portalón, a fabulous example of 15th century architecture near the Archealogical Museum, and home to truly fantastic Basque cuisine.
  5. Take your pick from Vitoria’s excellent Museum and Gallery scene – you could try the Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts), the Museo Arquelogico (Archaelogical Museum) or the funky and modern art gallery space at Artium.
